What is the Gospel?
Asking this question what is the gospel is similar to asking what is the truth. What is the truth about life, the fulness of life and eternal life? What is the foundation on which we build on?
The ultimate aspect of this question, is what is the final outcome of life? Is there an eternity and how will we spend eternity? Jesus said there is going to be an eternity for everyone either in heaven with Him or in hell with the devil and his angels. (Matthew 25:41)
Heaven will be heaven because God will be revealed in all HIs glory and goodness. There will not be any evil in heaven, nor sickness or tears. (Revelation 21:4) All wrongs will have been righted. It is were wise people want to end up.
However, the Bible tells us we have a problem. That problem is called sin. You have sinned and I have sinned and because of sin, none of us will go to heaven based on the quality of our goodness. (Romans 3:10-12) None of us is going to heaven based on how good we are, as compared to someone else. No one can earn there way to heaven. According to God's word, all people left to themselves are destined to an eternity in hell and the misery of the consequences of sin on earth.
The good news however, is that God loves us and has made a way for us to go to heaven, the only way and to have abundant life here now. (John 10:10) Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, (John 1;1,14) took the penalty of sin on the cross for those who receive Him as Savior and satisfied divine justice and rose from the dead to give us new and eternal life. This gift of God in Jesus Christ is available to all people, but if you don't receive it, it will do you no good. (John 1:12) If I give you a gift and you don't receive it, it becomes useless to the person who refuses it. The way you receive this gift of salvation is by a simple, sincere and honest prayer of repentance of sin and faith in Jesus Christ. God then does a supernatural work in our life and brings us to life, spiritual life and an inheritance of eternal life. God changes us from the inside out and give us a new heart with desires for the living God, and for His goodness and His will for our life. He then guides and directs our life in service and into fulness of life. To say no to God's invitation can harden your heart against the truth, so it is very urgent and of utmost importance to receive God's gift in Jesus Christ.
Once we are born again from heaven above God says in His word, "Thou our sins be red like scarlet they shall be white like snow" (Isaiah 1:18) When we are in Christ God sees us no longer in our sin, but see us in and through Christ and His righteousness which is credited to our account so we can have a love fellowship with a holy God right now, peace and joy and eternal life. We can receive His unmerited favor which is called grace and we walk in that grace, that strength, that affirmation and that love. We receive HIs grace, we do not earn it. (Ephesians 2:8-9) No one deserves or can demand God's grace.
Once you become a Christian it is important to let Jesus guide and direct your life as well as empower it. This occurs as we walk in His Spirit and nourish our spiritual development by prayer, reading and studying God's word, ministering in service and sacrificial love and identifying with Jesus publicly in our life and in the local church and by being baptized as a public proclamation of love and service with Jesus. We are called to be Jesus apprentice and voluntarily let Him guide us.
Now let me ask you a very important question. If you were do die today, do you know for sure you would go to heaven? You can be sure as the Bible says in 1 John 5:13, "These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God." Also as the :Spirit bears witness that we are children of God." (Romans 8:16) God also changes us from the inside out and changes our orientation to life and our desires. An orientation and desires that lead to the fulness of life.
If you are sincere and want to accept what Jesus did for you on the cross and enter fully into God's love then you can pray to receive Him as Savior and Lord right now. Pray a prayer similar to this: "Dear God, I confess that I am a sinner. I believe Jesus Christ died for the penalty of my sin on the cross and rose from the dead to give me new and eternal life. Please forgive me for my sin and come into my life and be my Savior and Lord and direct me in the way that God in HIs wisdom and goodness calls us to. Amen."
If you prayed that prayer you will notice your desires and orientation to life will change toward God and life. He will also give you His peace, joy and strength, but now it is very important to treasure this costly gift and honor and trust Him in how you live. Come publicly as His disciple and be baptized. Find a local church that teaches and preaches the whole counsel of God's word and join in the fellowship and the ministry. Be involved in a Bible Study group. Share what you have been given in Christ with others, especially the lost and join in building up the body of Christ the church, for God passionately loves His people. (read the book of 1 John in the Bible)
If you didn't notice a change in your life, then continue to seek the Lord with all your heart, mind soul and strength. Read you Bible everyday and pray that God would guide you and give you understanding of His word. Make room in your life for God to speak into. Go to church and hear the Word of God explained and join in directing your gaze to God in worship. Be part of a Bible study group. Make every effort to seek the Lord and He promises you will find Him. (Matthew 7:7-8).
In Scotland in time past, when a man was to be executed for a crime the time and the date of the execution would be posted on a billboard. It would say the name of the person the date and time, the person was to be "justified." In other words it is the time justice would be enacted or satisfied. When Jesus took the death penalty for those who receive Him as Savior and Lord--Divine justice was satisfied. Jesus took on our death penalty. We are thus justified by faith in Christ who took our death on Himself, so that in God's love we might have life. As the Bible states, "Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law" (Romans 3:28) The law tells us that we have sinned and God justifies us in Christ Jesus alone. We are saved by the faith in what God offers us in Jesus Christ by taking the penalty for our sin on the cross. We are saved by Jesus Christ Himself. There is no greater love. Christianity is not so much achieved but received. (John 1:12)
If you have prayed to receive Christ, contact me and let me know. If you need Christian guidance, instruction and coaching also let me know. It is essential to grow in Christian formation. A garden left unattended will grow weeds and choke out the good growth. God wants all of His people to walk in His fulness of life. (Ephesians 3:14-21)
When we receive Christ we are saved from the penalty of sin, as we grow in Christ or are sanctified by a process of Christian growth we are freed from the presence of sin and in heaven we will be free of the presence of sin.
